Voices from the Battle of Britain - Henry Buckton

Voices from the Battle of Britain

Henry Buckton

In July 1940 the fate of Britain hung in the balance, as across the English Channel the Nazi hordes were massing, preparing to invade this green and pleasant land. With lightning speed and military brilliance they had already conquered all before them. Then in the summer of 1940 Germany would suffer its first defeat in a desperate struggle that took place in the sky over southern England that became known as 'The Battle of Britain'.

In order to invade, the Germans would first have to gain control of the sky over the landing beaches, but their mighty armies were thwarted by a small group of men numbering less than 3,000 that Winston Churchill called 'The Few'.

In this book several surviving veterans recount their memories of the time. Also included are the stories of others that fought, who are sadly no longer with us, their memories provided by their families. And there are recollections of people involved in other ways, such as ground crew, ack-ack gunners, barrage balloon and searchlight operators. Collectively they give a true representation of the atmosphere of this unique episode in history. We are all indebted to each of these for bestowing on us a wonderful gift that we hardly appreciate or realize we have - our freedom!
